Attendance was down as a result of a misunderstanding and lack of attention from those at the meeting which resulted in some people not being able to get in to the meeting.

Alan previewed his presentation on ‘A Multi-Function Instrument for School Physics Experiments’ at the Open Source Hardware Camp on Saturday, 29th August 2026. The aim is to produce something which is cheap enough for schools’ physics departments to purchase in an era of reducing budgets.

John gave a brief introduction to the two free and open source accounting programs KMyMoney and GnuCash. KMyMoney is intended for personal accounts though it can be used for small business accounts where the business operates below the VAT threshold. Both use double entry accounting but KMyMoney hides this from the user. Both allow recording of all the details of the financial institutions and accounts being used, automatic entry of regular payments and receipts, allocation of payments and receipts to categories and a variety of reports. However, KMyMoney only provides reports for payment and receipts accounts whereas GnuCash can handle all that is needed for company accounts. Both are easily customisable.
